Why paper still matters

Even schools and teams that run most assessments online still need paper sometimes. Formal exam halls may require it, some classrooms do not have enough devices, some students have no internet at home, and some candidates simply perform better on paper. Having a printable version of every online test means you never have to rebuild it by hand.

Because the paper and online versions come from the same quiz, the questions stay identical, which keeps results comparable.

The three paper versions

The Master Paper export produces three versions from one quiz. The version with answers is your answer key for marking. The version without answers is a clean copy to hand out or use for review. The offline exam paper is laid out for participants to write their answers directly on the sheet during a supervised test.

Most teachers print the offline exam paper for students and keep the answer version for themselves.

Preparing the quiz before printing

Check the quiz as if it were a paper test. Questions that rely on an image should have the image clear enough to print well in black and white. Questions that referred to on-screen features, such as 'tap the option', should be reworded. Free text questions need enough space for handwritten answers, so consider how many you include.

Add clear instructions to the quiz description, since it may appear at the top of the paper.

Printing tips

Preview the PDF before printing a whole class set. Check page breaks so no question is split awkwardly across pages, and print one copy to proofread on paper, where mistakes are often easier to spot. Printing double-sided saves paper for longer tests, and numbering pages helps if sheets get separated during collection.

Hybrid classes

In a class where some students have devices and others do not, you can run the same test both ways at once. Students with devices take it online and are graded automatically; others take the printed offline paper. Using the same quiz for both keeps questions identical and fair, and the online results still give you instant data for most of the class.

Marking paper responses

For paper tests, use the answer version as your key. Mark objective questions quickly by comparing each paper against the key, and use a simple rubric for free text answers. Recording scores in the same spreadsheet as your exported online results keeps a complete record for every student, regardless of how they took the test.

Using printed papers for revision

The version without answers makes a useful revision sheet. Give it out before an exam for students to practise at home, then release the answer version or go through it in class. Keeping papers secure

For formal exams, treat printed papers like any confidential exam material. Print close to the exam date, store copies securely, count papers in and out, and avoid leaving answer versions on shared printers.
